On Friday 21st January, Bob Blackman MP has officially opened a wheelchair hiring facility at the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital.
Wheels 4 Ease, which is operated by the Friends of the RNOH, offers short-term wheelchair hire for local users and local patients of the RNOH.
The MP for Harrow East who is also President of the Friends said the facility was a credit to them.
“Trying to acquire a wheelchair at short notice can be extremely problematic so having a facility like this that provides easy access is fantastic,” said Mr Blackman.
“I am proud to open a facility that is run by such a dedicated team of volunteers and forms part of a whole range of musculoskeletal services offered at this national centre of excellence.”
The initiative to open such a facility was identified when Jon Marx, volunteer and founder of Wheels 4 Ease recognised there was a need for a wheelchair hiring service in the area, to bridge gaps not always covered by social services.
“Wheels 4 Ease has been providing a service to the local community at the RNOH's Stanmore site, since summer 2010,” said Mr Marx. “To date customers are coming from across the borough and demand is strong enough for the Friends to consider enlarging their stock of wheelchairs later this year."
Wheelchairs can be hired for short/medium-term use and at a competitive price, with all the proceeds going towards the RNOH.
