One of Bob’s first official events was to attend the official opening of the Sri Sanatan Hindu Temple which is a project he helped initiate20 years ago. When Bob was Leader of Brent Council the then trustees approached Brent Council to purchase the site. Bob Blackman and the Conservative Group agreed the sale of the site. Planning permission was granted by Brent Council’s Planning Committee on the Chairman’s casting vote with all the Conservatives voting in favour and all the Labour and Liberals voting against.
The temple has had a long period of building and encountered a number of problems and challenges. Finally, it was officially opened and Bob was there to welcome the opening.
Bob Blackman commented, “I am delighted that this magnificent Mandir has finally been opened for worship for local Hindus. I am pleased that the confidence that I placed in the concept has been demonstrated to be correct. I am only sad that the original trustees who envisioned the temple have died in the interim. No doubt they are looking down and smiling that their dream has become a reality.”
